Nofollow …Something is rotten in Denmark

September 27, 2007 – 12:01 am

Something is missing in the nofollow hoopla… it just doesn’t smell right.

Assuming that you believe Google is being forthright about what they actually do with nofollow you’re sure to conclude that as its use proliferates and we have nofollow abuse it’ll become as useful as the meta description tag. Of course, this means another update to disaffect nofollow.

But, what if it’s not actually a simple way to not pass on link juice or “credit” or whatever.

What if it’s another metric for Google to profile webmasters and sites. That is, who’s abuses it and who gets nofollowed a lot.

Perhaps it’s used as a damping factor in an evolved PR algo.

I question whether they’d offer up nofollow, given it’s expressed and understood intend, and expect it to actually weed out spamy links for any reasonable duration and not be rendered impotent by overuse and abuse.

After all, who’s going to use it? ..webmasters, SEO’s, etc. hellooooo?

Or maybe Matt and the Gplex super nerds just need to explain it better.

Your thoughts?
